The Rural Church

These are the day-to-day thoughts from Pastor Jeff Lawson. I pastor a Christian and Missionary Alliance Church in Battle Lake, MN. This blog will hopefully help everyone who desires to pastor a church in a rural setting...

High School

I was looking in my hometown paper this week and noticed that a girl that I went to school with died this week. Apparently she was mixed up with prescription medication and accidentally overdosed. This was very hard for me. No, I was never close to Tammy, but I have known her my whole life. It has been almost 25 years since we last spoke. She was very pretty. She was also popular. She was a very sweet girl, and I can't think of anyone in high school that did not like her.

I wonder what went wrong in her life to get her to turn to drugs. I wonder what hardships she faced that caused her to get addicted to such a harmful thing. It is weird when you think about those old friends from high school. This caused me to go get out my yearbook and re-visit some old friends there are so many faces that I thought that I would never forget, that somehow have escaped my memory. There are others that I was soooo close to that I haven't even thought about for years. There are only two or three people who I keep in contact with from high school.

I will remember Tammy for the kind person that I remember so fondly...

Is it October already?

If you are a regular to my blog, sorry. Life has been going 120 miles per hour and blogging has not been a priority. In all honesty, I like to do it, but I forget about it.

Today I am in the local high school working as a substitute teacher. I think this is a good way to get involved in the community. Every town that I have pastored, I have substituted in the schools. It is also a neat extra source of income.

This week we are sending out 7000 flyers to the community to kick off a new series that I am beginning. It is called Desperate Households. In a 48 hour span I had three separate couples come in for counselling. Each of them had the same theme. They live in fancy houses with new cars. they give the appearance that everything is perfect... Then you go inside of their home... Things are not as they appear.

I will be covering topics like relationships, sex, raising children, and finances. God wants to be a part of every area of our lives. He is able to help us. I would appreciate your prayers as we reach out to our community.
