The Rural Church

These are the day-to-day thoughts from Pastor Jeff Lawson. I pastor a Christian and Missionary Alliance Church in Battle Lake, MN. This blog will hopefully help everyone who desires to pastor a church in a rural setting...

What a Day!

Monday's are such long days. I teach two classes, I have a radio spot that I do, plus everything else that Monday's bring make for a very long day.

I stopped at the church after my night class and there was a meeting that was just ending. We allow the community to use our building for several classes each month. I ran into a young mother with her two kids who attended our church for the first time on Sunday.

I was very tired and spent from the long day, but I wanted to make sure that she knew that I knew who she was. We do have visitors every week, and last Sunday we had 236 for worship, but we did connect and chatted briefly following the service. I stopped and talked for a couples of minutes and when the converstaion ended I told her to let me know if she needed anything. She went on to tell me that I already helped her. At the end of our service on Sunday I gave the plan of salvation and explained God's free gift of Jesus. She did not know about that and prayed for the first time and accepted Jesus. Talk about a day changer! WOW! She is the second young adult in October that I have had the opportunity to lead to Christ and the third in less than two months!

The work that we are doing in Boone is hard work. I loved Hawley so much. It was such an easy church to be the pastor of. The people loved us and cared for us and made sure that we always felt appreciated. It is not that way in Boone, but oh my word, the fruit that we are seeing is unbelievable! God is bringing so many people to Himself in Boone through the ministry at Cornerstone Church. It is so rewarding to know that we are being used.

Now we are working on the follow-up and assimilation. God is good...All the time!

Prayer Walk

Yesterday, Curt and I traveled across the state to join several other C&MA pastors in a prayer walk. We have a church that has huge spiritual forces at work against them. (You know, the evil one is still alive and working!) We walked through every room claiming this work for Jesus Christ. It was an amazing time together.

Then I went from there to our District Office for an ishy meeting. I am on a special committee and some of our appointments are better than others. This one wasn't fun at all. God is good though and I believe that what was accomplished will bring glory to God. We also had an incredible sandwich at Gandolfo's in Omaha. You have t try the Mama Leone sandwich. Mmm Mmm good!

I also took off at 6:00 a.m. yesterday and walked out without my cell phone. It was cool not to be tied down with that, but I did return to find multiple important messages. I know I cannot do that often, but occasionally it is good to be unreachable.

Ever Wondered?

I had a very sweet time in my morning devotions this morning. I'm working on something new for me for my prayer time and it has helped tremendously. Instead of praying for every living creature known to me every morning, I have split it up between Monday-Thursday.

I like this because I am much more likely not to skip my prayer time if it is more manageable and organized. Why didn't I think of this 20 years ago? I know, I know... I'm a dufus!

I was reading Acts 8 this morning and was particularly taken with Phillip and his interaction with the Ethiopian. He did his job admirably, but then he was swept away. Can you imagine what the Ethiopian thought? He was definitely going to tell this story. How about Phillip? He was most definitely at full attention as well. This is for sure a story that I want to ask about when I get to heaven. What an awesome story of faithfulness and miracles!

A Broken Heart...

I have been a Cubs fan my entire life. I watched them lose more than 100 games multiple times in the 70's. I was devastated when Leon Durham let the ball roll between his legs and Steve Garvey hit the home run that did us in against San Diego in 1984. I listened to the lame excuses about fan interference when the Florida Marlins shocked us in 2003. Noe of those things compared to what I felt last night.

I admit that in the 7th inning when Lou Pinella brought in Kosuke Fukudome to play center flied after his benching just last game, I turned the TV off! My team for more than 35 years in the play-offs and I turned the TV off and rolled over in disgust. There are no goats or curses or fans that can be blamed. The Cubs suck! It was a very painful series to watch.

I have resolved to not be nearly as interested in baseball next year. The Cubs have officially lost me. They are looking for their golf clubs to spend the next four months playing in the sun, rolling in their disgusting wealth, and millions of people like me are saying stupid things like, "Wait till next year."

Last year was the last time for me. Period.
